Did Manchin Appoint Himself to Fill WV Senate Seat?

When Byrd died on June 28, 2010, Manchin appointed Carte Goodwin (his 36-year-old legal adviser) on July 16. On July 20, 2010, Manchin announced he would seek the Senate seat. In the August 28 Democratic primary he defeated former Democratic Congressman and former West Virginia Secretary of State Ken Hechler. In the general election he defeated Republican businessman John Raese with 54% of the vote.

Fun fact: Robert Byrd is the longest serving US Senator ever (as of the air date of this episode) having served from Jan 3, 1959-Jun 28, 2010 for a total of 51 years, 5 months, 26 days. He beat Daniel Inouye and Strom Thurmond by ~1.5 years and ~4 years, respectively.
